| Tipo | Estructura | Uso | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zero | If + present, present | Verdades generales, leyes científicas | If you heat ice, it melts. |
| First | If + present, will + inf. | Situaciones posibles en el futuro | If it rains, we will stay at home. |
| Second | If + past, would + inf. | Situaciones irreales o poco probables en el presente o el futuro | If I had more time, I would travel. |
| Third | If + past perfect, would have + part. | Situaciones irreales en el pasado | If I had studied, I would have passed. |
| Mixed | If + past perfect, would + inf. | Pasado irreal con consecuencia en el presente | If I had accepted the job, I would be rich now. |
Zero y first conditional
En la parte del resultado, además de will, puedes usar can, may, might, should o un imperativo.

Second conditional
Third y mixed conditional
«I didn't study, so I failed» → «If I had studied, I wouldn't have failed».

Unless, as long as, provided that, in case
|---|---|---|
| unless | a menos que (= if not) | I won't go unless you come with me. |
| as long as / so long as | siempre que | You can borrow it as long as you give it back. |
| provided (that) / providing | siempre y cuando (más formal) | We'll go provided that it doesn't rain. |
| in case | por si acaso (no es condición) | Take an umbrella in case it rains. |
| otherwise | si no, de lo contrario | Hurry up, otherwise we'll be late. |
«Unless you don't study» es incorrecto; lo correcto es «Unless you study, you'll fail» o «If you don't study, you'll fail».

Wish e if only
Wish e if only expresan deseos o arrepentimientos. If only es más enfático.
| Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| El presente | wish + past simple | I wish I had more free time. |
| El pasado (arrepentimiento) | wish + past perfect | I wish I hadn't said that. |
| I wish you would stop shouting. |
| Una capacidad | wish + could | I wish I could swim. |
«I wish I would…» es incorrecto: para ti mismo usa could o el pasado.

Errores típicos con los condicionales
- Will o would detrás de if: «If I would have time…» → «If I had time…».
- Mezclar tipos: «If I had studied, I would pass» → «… I would have passed».
- Doble negación con unless: «Unless you don't hurry» → «Unless you hurry».
- Wish + presente: «I wish I have a dog» → «I wish I had a dog».
Preguntas frecuentes
¿Cuántos tipos de condicionales hay en inglés?
+
Se suelen estudiar cinco: zero, first, second, third y mixed.
¿Se dice «if I was» o «if I were»?
+
¿Qué diferencia hay entre wish e if only?
+
Significan lo mismo y llevan la misma estructura, pero if only es más enfático y emocional.
¿Unless es lo mismo que if not?
+
Sí, en la mayoría de los casos. «Unless you study» = «If you don't study».
